The Caroline Guitar Company Crom pedal draws its inspiration from the classic Supa Tone Benders and Muff-style pedals that have long been revered by musicians. Utilizing BC184 transistors, this pedal takes a unique approach by ditching the conventional tone stack in favor of a tone control reminiscent of the vintage 1950s tweed amplifiers (referred to as the “Mountain” control), which dynamically interacts with the gain control, known as the “Sword” control. The outcome is a distinct mid-forward sound profile, steering away from the often scooped tones found in many other fuzz pedals. At lower gain settings, it delivers a tight and well-defined sound, while cranking up the gain unleashes a bold presence that cuts through any mix.
The Crom pedal offers two modes, namely standard and turbo, allowing users to fine-tune the gain range and frequency responses to their liking. Engaging the Turbo switch, especially with clean amplifiers or clean channels, delivers a powerful surge of gain. However, when stacking the Crom with other drive pedals or plugging it into crunchier amps, deactivating the Turbo switch tightens the bass response and transforms the pedal into a classic 1970s-style fuzzy drive and sustainer.
